"Malappuram" - literally meaning a terraced
place atop hills, this district was carved out of the dstricts of
Kozhikode and Palakkad. With Nilgiris in the east and the Arabian sea in
the west, Malappuram district presents a treat to the eye. Malappuram is
enriched by three great rivers flowing through it - the Chaliyar, the
Kadalundi and the Bharathapuzha. The district has a rich cultural and
political heritage. It was the military headquarters of the Zamorins of
Kozhikode since ancient times. Malappuram is known for national
movements such as Khilafat Movement and Moplah Rebellion, in which the
Muslim Mappilas and peasants struggled against feudalism and colonialism
alike. Not only because it is embellished with rich and evergreen
forests, serene rivers and chanting creeks, proud hills and prostrate
dales, but also because it is a land that is untouched by the hands of
modernity, and hence, tourists. The place was also an important centre
of both Vedic learning as well as Islamic philosophy. Poonkudi Thalapoli
is a Hindu religious festival of this mania.. The architectural styles
of temples and mosques and also the cultural and ritual art forms add
more value to this district. The beaches, rivers, waterfalls, backwater
destinations, hills, valleys, plantations and not to forget a famous
bird sanctuary binds you with their charm. Once there, you will not feel
like coming back.
