The northern most district of Kerala, Kasaragod is
situated on the sea coast bordered by hilly Kodagu and Mangalore
districts of Karnataka in the east and north. Kasargod is gifted by the
green scenery, water bodies, and forest and mineral reserves of
nature.The name, Kasaragod, is said to be derived from the word
Kusirakood meaning Nuxvomica forests (Kanjirakuttom). In ancient times,
it was an important trade center and was known to Arabs by the name
Harkwillia, a port city in the west coast of India. Kasargod is known
for its coir and handloom industries.Fishing is a prime source of
livelihood. Kasargod has a variety of temples and places of worship that
have a distinct architectural style.Other historical structures like the
great Juma Masjid speak volumes about the rich cultural background of

- Bekal Fort
The word Bekal is derived from the word
Baliakulam,meaning big palace. The term Baliakulam got corrupted as
Bekulam and later as Bekal. The largest and best-preserved fort in
Kerala, the Bekal Fort is suspended atop a hill, giving a strategic
and panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. This imposing
circular structure of laterite, rising 130 feet above sea level,
stands on a 35-acre headland that runs into the Arabian Sea. This
fort is more than 300 years old and is believed to ha ve been built
in the 1650's by Sivappa Naik of the Ikkeri dynasty. Bekal is a
favorite haunt for the film makers due to its natural beauty. It
gives a scenic view of the picturesque countryside. This fort has
gained a place in the international tourism map.
